Civil Rights icon John Lewis came to Joe Biden’s defense after Biden suffered backlash over his boasting of working with political adversaries, such as racist segregationists, as a lawmaker.
“I don’t think the remarks were offensive,” the Georgia Democrat said. “During the height of the Civil Rights Movement, we worked with people and got to know people that was members of the Klan.”
Biden’s segregationist comments sparked a backlash from his Democratic rivals in the 2020 primary, particularly from his black opponents. But Lewis, like several other prominent African-American lawmakers, had Biden’s back with a full-throated defense of the front-runner.
