What We Learned About President Trump’s 2005 Taxes

President Donald Trump’s 2005 tax documents were leaked to MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow by Investigative reporter David Cay Johnson. President Trump paid $36.5 million on $153 million in income, that’s roughly a 24% rate. He also took a write-off of $103 million.

Johnson pointed out that without the alternative minimum tax, Trump would have paid only $5.3 million, a tax rate of less than 4%.

Despite a long-standing tradition for presidential candidates to release their taxes, Trump has repeatedly said he could not release his tax returns because they were under audit.
