Foreign Minister Julie Bishop has taken a not-so-diplomatic swipe at US President Donald Trump for praising the French first lady’s body shape, questioning whether she would pay him the same sort of compliment.
During his official visit to France last week Mr Trump was heard telling Brigitte Macron she was in “such great shape”.
In a video posted on social media by the French government, Mr Trump then looks at Emmanuel Macron and repeats his comments – “she’s in such good physical shape” – before turning back to Mrs Macron and saying “beautiful”.
The exchange has led to more accusations of sexism against the 71-year-old president, who is often criticised for his remarks about women’s appearances.
Ms Bishop said she would be “taken aback” if Mr Trump said something similar to her.
“It’s a rather interesting comment to make. I wonder if she could say the same of him?” Ms Bishop told the ABC’s Insiders program.
Ms Bishop declined to say anything further, saying she would not provide a running commentary on Mr Trump’s conversation with the French president’s wife anymore than she would his Twitter account.
“What I focus on is the relationship between the United States and Australia and how it benefits our nations for us to have one of the closest connections that two countries can have in defence, security and trade,” she said.
Mrs Macron was her husband’s high school teacher and their relationship has drawn attention because of their age difference. He is 39 and she is 64.
It is the same roughly 25-year age difference between Mr Trump and his wife Melania, who is 47.
Mr Trump has also been accused of sexism for criticising the looks of people as diverse as his former rival Hillary Clinton, comedian Rosie O’Donnell, media boss Ariana Huffington and model Heidi Klum.
His presidential campaign was rocked last year after the release of video in which he was heard talking about grabbing women “by the pussy”.
During Mr Trump’s quick visit to Paris he and Ms Macron discussed international issues such as the war in Syria and terrorism.
